Mr. and Mrs. Lim lived in a typical Singaporean HDB flat in Ang Mo Kio. Their 90cm wide entryway had always been a challenge. Shoes, bags, and umbrellas cluttered the space, especially during the monsoon season when dampness made everything musty. 'We loved our neighbourhood, but that wall space felt like a nightmare,' shared Mrs. Lim, recalling 2019. The couple had just celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary and decided it was time for a change.
Singapore’s humidity and compact living spaces demanded smart solutions. The Lims researched online, visiting Midhill during weekends. 'We wanted something elegant but practical,' said Mr. Lim. Their search led to the Curved Fluted Sideboard with Gold Pedestal Legs. Listed at S$4520.00, it seemed perfect—90cm wide, 55cm deep, and 180cm tall—exactly fitting their entryway dimensions. The ivory cream finish complemented their dining room while the brushed champagne gold legs added a touch of modern glamour.
The sideboard’s full-height vertical fluting caught their eye. 'It looked like it would brighten the small space,' explained Mrs. Lim. The manufacturer described it as 'timeless Art Deco-inspired craftsmanship meets contemporary Italian design.' Weighing 48kg, it promised stability despite its delicate appearance. The marble-top look (actually premium resin) would resist Singapore’s dampness better than real marble. 'We checked MIDHILL’s reviews—installers were quick and professional,' Mr. Lim noted.
The Lims purchased the sideboard in December 2019. Delivery arrived before Chinese New Year, allowing them to reorganize during the holiday break. 'The curved shape was a revelation,' Mrs. Lim said. 'Bags and shoes now fell naturally into place instead of forming piles.' They used the top for decorative items and installed small LED strips underneath, illuminating the fluting as evening fell. 'Now, our entryway feels like a proper welcoming space,' she added. The sideboard has since become a neighbourhood talking point.
The success stemmed from careful planning. The Lims measured twice—once in their entryway, once in MIDHILL's showroom. 'Many similar pieces looked too bulky in our actual space,' Mr. Lim admitted. The sideboard’s 90cm width was perfect for their wall, while the 55cm depth allowed for comfortable knee clearance. 'We also considered the monsoon,' Mrs. Lim explained. 'The synthetic marble top repelled water better than our old wooden console.'
For other Singaporean homeowners, the Lim’s experience offers guidance. 'Measure your space before buying,' advised Mrs. Lim. 'And consider how light will fall on the fluting—it creates beautiful shadows during our equatorial days.' The sideboard now sits in their entryway, reflecting both their taste and Singapore’s practical demands. 'It’s not just furniture—it’s storage with style,' Mr. Lim said, watching his children play nearby. 'That’s what we needed.'
