Cloudy Comfort in Midhill HDB | MIDHILL

Lim Choon and her family lived in a 4-room HDB flat in Midhill, Singapore, for eight years. The master bedroom was spacious, but the living room felt cramped—just 4.5m x 4.5m, typical of many Singapore condos. The humidity made fabric furniture a nightmare, and the monsoon rains in November and December always left a musty smell lingering.

Lim, a graphic designer, worked from home and needed a comfortable loveseat where she could read or take video calls. The existing sofa, a hand-me-down from her parents, was bulky and stained from a spill. Every time her children, aged 6 and 9, sat on it, the frame creaked. They dreamed of moving to a bigger flat but kept putting it off—prices in areas like Toa Payoh or Yishun were simply out of reach.

Seeking the Perfect Fit

The family visited furniture stores during Singapore’s May sales, but nothing felt right. Most loveseats were over S$1,200, and none were designed for the climate. They needed something small, durable, and stylish—something that wouldn’t gather dust during the humid Singaporean summer.

In July, Lim saw an advertisement for an American Cream-Style Cloud Arch Queen Bed with Leather Diamond-Tufted Headboard at S$1150 per set. The catalogue showed it as 135cm wide, 190cm deep, and 95cm high—a perfect fit for their living room. The turned tapered wood legs and quiet slat base seemed ideal for the constant rain.

Design That Resists the Elements

The loveseat featured a cream-white leather tufted headboard with soft grey edging. The cloud-like arch headboard was 120cm tall, ergonomically designed for lounging. The turned tapered wood legs added warmth, while the quietly operating slat base promised no creaking sounds during late-night talks. The American cream style would blend with their existing Scandinavian decor.

Lim measured their space again. The loveseat would leave at least 50cm of walking room on all sides—important for navigating the tight spaces in Singapore’s HDBs. The S$1150 price was affordable after using a CPF Ordinary Account for home renovations.

Fitting It in Midhill

The family ordered the loveseat from a local store in Bishan. Delivery took three days—faster than expected. Installation was quick, and the delivery team even disassembled their old sofa for S$50. The new loveseat took up just 1.35m of floor space, leaving plenty for a coffee table and a small plant.

The leather material was breathable, unlike the synthetic fabrics they’d tried before. After a week of use during Singapore’s September rains, no musty smell developed. The diamond tufting made cleaning spills easy—just a quick wipe with a damp cloth. Her children loved the high backrest; it supported their posture during homework sessions.

Climate-Smart Living

The turned legs were particularly smart for Singapore’s humidity. They allowed air to circulate underneath, preventing mold growth. The cloud-like arch headboard, while tall, didn’t overwhelm the small room. Midhill’s neighbours often commented on how spacious the living area felt with the new furniture.

During the Diwali season, Lim noticed how well the cream-coloured loveseat complemented the red and gold decorations. The neutral tone made the room feel less cluttered, despite its small size. She especially appreciated the ergonomic curved backrest; her lower back no longer ached after reading on the sofa for an hour.

More Than Just Furniture

By December, the family had hosted two gatherings on the loveseat. The quiet base remained silent even when the monsoon howled outside. The soft grey piping around the headboard added subtle elegance, and the plush ivory leather-look padding had resisted fading despite Singapore’s harsh sun.

Lim decided to keep the loveseat even if they eventually moved—a likely scenario now that their youngest child was starting primary school. The S$1150 investment had solved their comfort problem without sacrificing style or practicality. Midhill’s compact HDBs were perfect for furniture like this—one that made a big impact without taking up too much space.

“We love how it fits our lifestyle,” Lim said during a visit to a friend’s new condo in Ang Mo Kio. “Small flats need smart choices, and this loveseat is definitely one.”
