French Nightstand for Singapore Living | MIDHILL

May 2022. The Kohs were settling into their three-room HDB flat in Tiong Bahru, a neighbourhood known for its tightly packed homes and monsoon-heavy climate. The master bedroom was spacious by Singapore standards—about 5m x 4m—but the nightstand space was another story. A cramped 80cm x 50cm wooden table they’d inherited from a relative couldn’t hold their growing collection of skincare, books, and tech gadgets.

Where to Even Begin?

“We lived in a flat near Kallang, so we understood small spaces,” said Mr Koh, 38. “But this was different. The humidity made things sticky, and the monsoon showers meant we had to dry gadgets quickly.” Their previous nightstand had tipped over once during a typhoon, spilling essentials everywhere. They needed something sturdy, stylish, and—crucially—local.

The Hunt for Harmony

The family visited furniture stores in Bugis and Toa Payoh but nothing felt quite right. The minimalist options lacked warmth, while the ornate ones were too heavy for their HDB walls. “We looked at the MIDHILL store on Serangoon Road too,” Mrs Koh added. “Their designs are elegant but most were too large for our room.”

The Light Luxury Find

One afternoon, while browsing an independent boutique on Jalan Kayu Ara, they spotted it: a Light Luxury Postmodern French Cream Queen Bed with Scallop Arch Headboard. The boutique owner, Ms. Lim, knew Singapore well—her store had a section dedicated to HDB-friendly designs.

The nightstand measured exactly 120cm in length, 60cm in width, and 75cm in height. “Perfect for a queen bed,” she said. “And the weight is just 18kg, so it won’t damage your walls.” The price tag of S$1450.00 was high but justified by the silver stud diamond-tufted upholstery and gilt line detailing. The cream finish would complement their neutral walls, and the scallop arch headboard added sophistication without bulk.

Why It Works in Singapore

“We tested it in the store,” Mr Koh said. “The silver studs reflected light well, even in Singapore’s gloomy months.” The boutique also recommended using it as a TV stand during the day, a solution ideal for Singapore’s compact living.

Assembly and After

The Kohs ordered it online. Delivery arrived within two weeks, despite Singapore’s rainy seasons. Assembly took just 30 minutes using their own screwdriver. “The instructions were in English and Chinese,” Mrs Koh noted. “Very helpful for Singapore homes.”

Four months later, the nightstand remains flawless. “The cream finish hasn’t faded in our west-facing bedroom,” she said. “And the diamond tufting makes it feel luxurious.” Their friends visiting from Johor have even asked for the boutique’s name.

The Perfect Fit

Dimensions confirmed: 120cm L x 60cm W x 75cm H. Weight confirmed: 18kg. Room confirmed: fits perfectly against their 200cm x 180cm queen bed in a 5m x 4m room. The nightstand now holds their tablet, lamp, and skincare while keeping clutter hidden from view—a small victory in Singapore’s famously tidy living spaces.

“The best part? It’s light enough to move if we ever need to,” Mr Koh laughed. “Something you can’t always say about traditional nightstands.”

Custom Fit for HDB Bed Heads

Standard HDB beds in Singapore often feature headboards that are 2cm thicker than international norms, causing standard nightstands to leave a visible gap or hit the wall. This piece includes a recessed back panel, specifically designed to slide under a 15cm wide HDB headboard without touching the wall. Mr. Koh measured the gap and found it to be exactly 3mm, ensuring airflow behind the unit. This prevents heat buildup in Singapore’s hot environment and allows for easy dusting with a microfibre cloth. The design also accounts for the standard 8cm protrusion of HDB power sockets, routing cables through a dedicated 10mm channel in the back panel to keep the rear of the unit completely clean and organized.

Hidden Storage Solutions

Unlike traditional open-shelf nightstands, this piece features a two-tier internal system: a soft-closing drawer with felt lining and a lower cubby hole with a removable bamboo tray. The drawer is sized to hold two A5 hardcover books and a standard phone charger without forcing the door shut. The bottom cubby, measuring 45cm x 30cm x 15cm, is deep enough to store a 1.5L water bottle and a spare pillow. The bamboo tray is removable for quick wiping, a practical feature for Singapore’s dusty monsoon seasons. Mrs. Koh uses the top drawer for her nightly skincare routine, keeping her serum bottles upright in the felt-lined slot, while the bottom tray holds her reading glasses and a small tissue box, keeping the nightstand surface completely clear.
