Pet Bed or Shared Queen? Australian Styling Guide | MIDHILL

Two options for pet owners in Australian homes

When a dog or cat wants to sleep near you, the furniture decision gets bigger than price. In a small Melbourne rental, a 153 cm by 204 cm queen bed can swallow the room, while in a wide Brisbane or Perth home it can become the calm centrepiece of a pet-friendly bedroom. For this guide, I have compared two realistic choices: using the French Light Luxury Piano-Key Vertical-Tufted Queen Bed with Cream Leather Headboard, Champagne Metal Frame and Curved Cabriole Legs as a shared pet-friendly bed, or placing a dedicated pet bed or bench beside it. The first option costs A$1150.00 per bed, while a separate pet bed typically costs A$120 to A$280. The better option depends on animal size, humidity, lease rules and how much surface area your pet actually touches.

Option A: A shared queen bed as pet furniture

This bed reads as furniture first and pet furniture second, which is why it appeals to owners who dislike plastic crates, canvas pods and obvious dog gear in the bedroom. The piano-key vertical tufting gives the headboard clean channels, about 8 cm wide, and the stepped double-tier silhouette raises the central panel so the bed looks finished even when a 20 kg dog has curled against the pillow. The cream leather feels soft but cool under coastal heat, and the champagne metal edging plus gold stud trim gives the piece a dressier line than a plain upholstered bed. The curved cabriole legs, around 16 cm high, also create a small air gap under the frame, useful in damp climates if you avoid pushing the bed hard against a wall.

However, cream is a commitment. If your pet is a 25 kg retriever, a muddy border collie, or a cat with occasional sickness, this surface needs protection. A washable cotton runner 60 cm by 150 cm, clipped at the foot, will catch claws and drool. I would still budget for a leather-safe spray every 6 months, and expect the metal studs to be checked yearly for looseness. If you live in a rental and can leave the bed behind, the cost is easier to justify; if you are buying for a long-term owner-occupied home, the same bed may last 5 to 7 years with proper rotation and cleaning.

Option B: A dedicated pet bed beside the frame

The alternative is a lower pet bed, bench or bolster pod placed in a 60 cm by 40 cm footprint beside the bed. For a small dog or cat, a 70 cm by 55 cm pet bed with a removable waterproof liner weighs about 3 kg and can be laundered every 2 to 4 weeks. For a larger dog, choose a 100 cm by 70 cm bench with a washable cover, not a flimsy mattress that flattens after 12 months. This option keeps the human bed cleaner, and it works well in rentals where pet damage deposits are the main fear. The trade-off is visual: pet furniture often looks like pet furniture unless you select a neutral shade that matches the bedroom palette.

Which option suits your home?

Styling plan: colour, texture and lighting

Cream leather and champagne metal can look cold if you pile on too much white bedding. I would build a three-tone scheme: cream at the headboard, a sandy oatmeal runner across the lower third, and a deeper accent in charcoal, olive or navy at the pet mat. In a MIDHILL-style neutral bedroom, that palette feels calm rather than clinical. Texture matters even more with this bed because the vertical tufting creates shadow lines. Pair it with matte timber side tables, a linen throw with a slight slub weave, and a low-pile wool rug 200 cm by 150 cm. Avoid high-shine satin and plastic pet beds; they clash with the gold studs and make the frame look dated.

Lighting should soften the metal. Use 2700K to 3000K bulbs in bedside pendants or table lamps, placed about 120 cm above the floor so the champagne frame catches a warm line rather than a harsh reflection. A narrow beam at 24 degrees can highlight the piano-key channels; a broad 60-degree spread will flatten them. For a pet household, add one small dimmable warm lamp near the pet bed. This helps older dogs navigate at night and stops the bedroom from looking like a showroom after dark.

Australia-specific climate and shipping notes

In northern Australia, especially Darwin, Cairns and tropical Queensland, high humidity can turn a heavy upholstered bed into a mould trap if airflow is poor. Keep the bed at least 5 cm from external walls, rotate the mattress every 3 months, and vacuum the leather channels weekly. In southern coastal homes, salt air can dull metal studs over 18 to 24 months, so wipe the champagne frame with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Shipping is another factor. A queen bed frame can arrive as two or three packages, sometimes 25 kg to 40 kg each, and regional freight to places like Toowoomba, Ballarat or the Gold Coast hinterland may add 2 to 4 weeks beyond metro delivery. If you need it for a move-in date, order at least 6 weeks early.

Practical buying checklist

The French bed wins when the pet is calm, clean and low-impact, and when you want bedroom furniture that does not announce itself as dog gear. The dedicated pet bed wins when routine washing matters more than styling drama. For many Australian homes, the smart answer is the hybrid: a beautiful bed you are happy to be seen in, plus a practical pet surface that takes the daily mess.
