How Humidity in Southeast Asia Affects Wood Furniture | MIDHILL

Last month I visited a four-room HDB in Tampines to photograph a solid wood dining table. The owner had unpacked the table eleven days earlier, after the delivery crew carried it up in a lift that measured roughly 150cm by 210cm. On the surface, a 1.5mm gap had opened where the tabletop met the breadboard end. She thought it was a defect. It was not. That gap was the wood exhaling after weeks inside a sealed container.

Humidity in Southeast Asia rarely makes itself visible in one dramatic event. It works slowly. A 180cm dining table in a Punggol flat absorbs moisture at the end, where the grain is open, and pushes against the central support rail. The timber splits, but only after months. The trigger is often shipping: the wood leaves Foshan with an 8-10% moisture content, sits in a container for 10-14 days, and then lands in a Singapore bedroom where the relative humidity stays above 85% for weeks. The wood changes. It must.

Why a 1.5mm Gap Tells You More Than a Polished Surface

Wood is hygroscopic. The moisture inside a board always tries to match the air around it. In a dry, air-conditioned condo in Bedok, the equilibrium moisture content of oak can drop to 9%. In an un-air-conditioned HDB corridor, it rises to 15%. That six-point swing is enough to produce a visible change on a 120cm wardrobe door: the door either swells at the bottom or develops a 2mm gap along the stile. The wood is not failing. It is settling. MIDHILL kiln-dries its hardwood frames and boards to 8-10% moisture content before machining. By the time a solid wood sofa frame is assembled, the tenons fit with the precision of a 0.5mm tolerance. The same frame, delivered to Tampines and left to sit overnight, will expand across the grain. A well-made joint handles that movement because the tenon is shorter than the mortise is deep, leaving a small air space inside the joint.

In a HDB bedroom, the wood will reach a new equilibrium within four to six weeks. The tabletop may move another 1mm after that, so we leave a 4mm shadow gap under the breadboard ends on all dining tables. This gap is not visible from the top, but it gives the wood somewhere to go during a two-week rain period. The same thinking applies to a solid wood wardrobe: the back panels are inset, not glued, because the centre panel needs to grow by roughly 2mm across a 90cm span.

How do I style a Japandi master bed in a small apartment?

Place the bed frame against the longest wall, keep the nightstand low, and let the platform edge carry the visual weight. In a 4-room HDB master bedroom of roughly 330cm by 300cm, a 180cm-wide Japandi bed frame leaves 75cm on each side. A 45cm-deep nightstand fits without blocking the wardrobe opening. A 30cm-high platform bed frame makes the ceiling feel higher and allows air to move under the slats, which matters in a tropical climate. When you order a Nordic master bed canada, the packaging differs from the crate used for a local HDB delivery, but the styling rules stay the same: one warm wood tone, one low nightstand, and nothing leaning against the air-conditioner wall.

If the bedroom has a 90cm wardrobe beside the door, choose a bed frame with a shallow headboard, around 8cm deep, so the visual mass stays at mattress height. A Japandi style also tolerates an unmatched nightstand: a 45cm-wide oak nightstand on one side and a 35cm ceramic stool on the other. The symmetry comes from the bed frame, not from matching lamps.

Lift Widths, Corridor Corners, and Delivery Days

The shipping route does not end at the port. In Singapore, the last 10 metres can damage a piece of furniture more than the entire sea voyage. A typical HDB lift has a 150cm by 210cm footprint, but the lift door opening is closer to 80cm. A 180cm dining table crate will not fit standing upright. The crew tilts it; if the table has been packed with only foam corners and plastic sheeting, the tilting force transfers to the table legs. The 14-day delivery window from order to door includes a white-glove team that measures the corridor before they unwrap anything. A Bedok corridor corner can be as narrow as 92cm at waist height, and the packing box for a 140cm wardrobe adds 12cm on each side. For a 45kg solid wood sofa crate, two movers need a 90cm turning radius. If the corridor is below that, we ask the customer to reserve the service lift in their condo, which is usually 110cm wide. This is why shipping damage in a Punggol flat is rarely a crushed box. It is a 2mm twist in a table leg caused by a turn that the packaging could not absorb.

GST is charged on the declared value of the furniture, and for a S$1,800 dining table the 9% GST adds S$162. MIDHILL offers free shipping over US$350, which converts to about S$470. The free-shipping threshold does not change the delivery quality: the crew still uses felt blankets, and the driver stays until the packing material is removed. Delivery teams in Singapore often carry furniture through a covered walkway before they reach the lift. That walkway is exposed to rain. A solid wood bed frame wrapped in clear plastic can sit there for 20 minutes while the driver calls the resident. The surface finish can handle a little moisture, but the exposed tenon inside a partially opened joint cannot. We wrap each joint area with breathable paper and place 500g silica gel packs inside the carton.

Why a Solid Wood Sofa Frame Reacts Differently from a Veneer Box

Not all wood furniture behaves the same. A solid wood sofa frame made of kiln-dried rubberwood can move 2-4mm across its armrests in a humid month. A wardrobe made of printed particleboard expands but cannot recover, so its bottom edge eventually swells into a 1mm lip. A solid wood bed frame with floating slats is safer in a HDB bedroom because the slats allow air to rise from beneath. A nightstand, if it is tied tightly to a wall, will not move; the frame will. The same relationship applies to a marble table. The stone surface has nearly zero moisture movement, so the oak base beneath it must bear all the expansion. In a post-modern light luxury living room, this contrast is intentional: a 160cm marble table with a 5cm-thick oak base looks refined, but the base needs a 3mm expansion gap where it meets the metal crossbar. Without that gap, the marble can crack during the monsoon. A S$680 nightstand split because the owner sealed the underside with polyurethane, trapping moisture inside; a breathable hardwax oil finish is a safer choice for Singapore.

French light luxury uses more lacquer and high-gloss surfaces, but in this climate the harder the surface, the easier a hairline crack shows. Post-modern light luxury, with its mix of stone, metal, and open-pore wood, is more forgiving because the design already contains visible seams. The seams are not defects; they are part of the piece. If you choose a marble table, ask for a 10mm-thick stone top and a wood base with a floating-edge connection. That combination lets the wood shrink and expand without stressing the marble.

Shipping Damage Is Often a Moisture Problem, Not a Truck Problem

When a customer in Singapore calls about shipping damage, the first question is always: Was the box crushed? The more common cause is moisture. During sea freight from Foshan to Singapore, a container can heat up to 50°C on the inside. The wood expands, the metal fasteners hold, and the stress accumulates. When the crate is opened in a 28°C living room, the wood releases that stress gradually. A hairline crack can appear on the second day, not the first. The 10-year structural warranty covers this movement, and the 14-day returns policy gives you time to watch the piece settle. Wait 48 hours before rejecting a table because of a gap. Measure the side panels, not the top. A 1mm crack along a drawer dovetail is often normal seasonal movement; a 5mm gap at a mortise joint is not. The difference is whether the joint is structural. A wardrobe door that refuses to close after three days in a Punggol flat is a moisture issue, not a delivery issue. Open the window, run the dehumidifier for 24 hours, and the door will usually close again.

The same logic applies to a solid wood sofa. If the armrest feels loose 48 hours after delivery, check the corner block screw. A 2mm turn with a screwdriver is normal. If the armrest moves 8mm at the front edge, the joint has failed. That is a shipping-damage claim, not a moisture issue. Photograph the joint, measure the gap, and email the photo within the 14-day returns period.

What to Check After the Delivery Crew Leaves

Write the date on the delivery note. Then wait one full day. After 24 hours, look for these signs: a solid wood sofa frame that rocks more than 2mm on a flat floor; a bed frame slat that pops out of its recess by more than 4mm; a dining table top where the end seam opens by more than 1.5mm. If the piece was delivered on a Tuesday, do not measure on Wednesday morning. Measure on Friday evening, after the wood has had 72 hours to equalise. The GST invoice helps: MIDHILL's lifetime refinishing service applies to the product, not the delivery company. A scratched centre beam on a marble table can be polished out, and a dinged wooden edge can be sanded down by up to 1mm without changing the profile. What cannot be fixed is a cracked main rail on a solid wood wardrobe. That is the moment to call us, attach a photo, and use the 10-year structural warranty.

Keep the delivery photos together with the GST receipt. In a humid year, a 120cm drawer front can move 1.5mm across its width, so a drawer that was smooth in March may stick in November. The solution is usually a wax rub on the runner, not a rebuild. That is normal. What is not normal is a 12mm split along a glued panel, or a wardrobe door that drops on its hinges. Those are structural failures and are covered by the warranty.

Humidity is not the enemy of solid wood. It is the medium in which wood lives. A bed frame from Foshan can thrive in a Bedok HDB, as long as the moisture content, the joinery, and the delivery route were designed for the trip. Give the wood a week. It will settle into your home.
