I used to assume any 120cm table would work if it physically fit. Then I tried pulling chairs in and out in a 3-room HDB dining corner. The working footprint is larger than the tabletop.
A standard dining table is 75cm high. Most Singapore chairs have a seat height of around 45cm, which leaves about 30cm between the seat and tabletop. That is workable, but check the lowest rail: under-table clearance for knees should be 60-65cm from the floor, not from the tabletop.
For each person, allow 60cm of table width and 35-40cm of depth. More critical is the gap behind the chair. You need 90-110cm from table edge to wall to pull a chair out without doing a sideways shuffle. If you only have 70cm, use a bench on the wall side or switch to a round table.
If your dining corner is awkward, custom furniture is often cheaper than forcing a standard table into an alcove and losing 20cm of walkway.
| Table size | Recommended space envelope | Weight | Price from SGD | Lead time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 110 x 60 x 75 cm | 230 x 180 cm | 18 kg | 420 | 3-5 weeks |
| 120 x 65 x 75 cm | 240 x 190 cm | 26 kg | 520 | 3-5 weeks |
| 130 x 70 x 75 cm | 250 x 200 cm | 30 kg | 590 | 4-6 weeks |

A 3-room HDB living room in districts like Punggol, Woodlands or Bukit Merah is often 2.6m to 3m wide after a TV console. I have measured enough units to say a 2.4m sofa usually makes the space feel like a holding area. For a 3m wall, keep sofa length between 1.8m and 2.2m.
With a leather sofa, depth matters as much as length. A 2m sofa that is 90cm deep can block the walkway if the living room is only 2.6m across. You need at least 60cm of clear walking space between the sofa and the console or wall, and 76cm if the path leads to bedrooms because you will carry laundry and bags.
Low-profile legs make a sofa look lighter, but they do not save floor space. The real space saver is a seat depth of 80-85cm instead of 95cm. Avoid chunky armrests that add 10-15cm per side; slim arms recover 20-30cm of usable sofa length.
| Sofa type | Length x depth x height | Weight | Price from SGD | Lead time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2-seater leather sofa | 150 x 82 x 70 cm | 28 kg | 950 | 2-4 weeks |
| 2.5-seater fabric compact | 178 x 85 x 72 cm | 32 kg | 1,200 | 2-4 weeks |
| 3-seater low-profile leather | 200 x 84 x 70 cm | 38 kg | 1,450 | 3-5 weeks |
If you need a true 3-seater but only have a 2.2m wall, custom furniture can reduce arm width to 8cm. That usually adds 2-3 weeks to lead time, but the gain is a sofa that actually fits the wall without shrinking the walkway.

Humidity does not ruin solid wood furniture if the timber is dried and built for the climate. But it will expose cheap joinery and wet timber. Singapore indoor humidity often sits at 65-80 percent during the wet months, and that is hard on furniture that was never conditioned for Southeast Asia.
The real issues are expansion, contraction, and mold. Solid wood moves. A tabletop with no allowance for movement can bow or split. A wardrobe door may swell and scrape against the frame. To reduce risk, look for kiln-dried hardwood, sealed end grain, and joints that let the wood move a few millimetres without tearing itself apart.
I asked MIDHILL, a Foshan solid-wood furniture maker established in 2008, about this. Their answer was practical: a 10-year structural warranty only matters if the timber was dried correctly and the finish does not trap moisture. That still means you should not put damp towels on a table, but it tells you the factory is thinking about structure rather than just looks.
For small space furniture, choose pieces with a 2-3mm gap around drawer fronts and door edges. Avoid placing glass directly over wood tops without spacers, because trapped moisture can cloud the finish. Wipe surfaces with a dry cloth monthly and keep bathroom doors closed after showers.
A console table starts being useful at 25cm depth. Below that, it is a shelf. In an HDB entryway, a 30cm deep console holds keys, mail and a small lamp without eating the 1.2m corridor. The mistake I see is buying a 40cm console because it looks more substantial, then brushing past it every day.
Height should be 75-90cm if it stands alone. If it sits behind a sofa, go 70-75cm so it does not tower over the back. Length depends on the wall: 80cm works for a 1m wall, and 100-120cm works for a longer BTO entryway. A console narrower than 60cm usually looks like a floating shelf unless it is paired with a mirror.
Weight matters for stability. A slim solid wood console at 12-18kg will not tip if you bump it, but a 5kg flatpack one can. If you use a drawer, make sure it opens at least 30cm. In a 1.1m wide corridor, a 30cm console leaves 80cm to walk, which is comfortable enough for one person carrying groceries.
Custom furniture makes sense here because standard console depths of 35-40cm often do not fit narrow HDB entryways. A 25cm x 80cm x 75cm piece in solid wood can be made for about 290-350 SGD with a 4-6 week lead time.
In most HDB bedrooms, yes. A 2.8m wall that already has a queen bed of 1.5m width leaves about 1.3m for storage and walking. A 2.4m wardrobe leaves only 20cm on each side if the bed is centered, which is too tight for opening doors and moving around. You want at least 55-65cm clearance on the open side of the bed and 60-70cm in front of a wardrobe.
A better setup for a small bedroom is a 1.6m to 1.8m wardrobe paired with under-bed storage or a wall-mounted shelf. Wardrobe depth should be 55-60cm for hanging clothes. Sliding doors save about 50-60cm of opening space compared to hinged doors, which matters in a room that is 2.8m across.
Check the hanging rail: it should be metal and supported in the middle if the wardrobe is over 1.2m long. A solid wood wardrobe can weigh 80-120kg, which is fine for HDB slabs but not for delivery through narrow doorways. If the bedroom door is 80cm wide, a fully assembled 60cm deep wardrobe will not pass. Go for knock-down delivery or custom furniture assembled in the room.
This is where many small space furniture plans fail. Lifts, staircases, and door openings dictate whether a piece can enter your unit. Most HDB lifts have an internal height of 230-240cm and a door width of 80-90cm. If your sofa is over 2m long, check diagonal clearance. A 2.2m sofa can sometimes enter an 80cm lift only when wrapped and angled, but not always. Condo freight lifts are often larger, but older condos in districts like Bukit Timah or Newton may have narrow service lifts.
Measure the narrowest point on the path: lift door, main door, bedroom door. HDB main doors are usually 90cm, but bedroom doors are often 80cm. A 60cm deep wardrobe passes through an 80cm door only if it is knocked down. A solid wood dining table with fixed legs may need to be carried up stairs if the lift is too small, which can add 50-100 SGD in moving fees.
Assembly cost is separate from delivery. Expect delivery at 40-80 SGD for local orders and assembly at 30-60 SGD per piece for beds, wardrobes or sofa legs. Lead times for made-to-order small space furniture in Singapore run 2-6 weeks, and for custom furniture from Foshan factories, 4-7 weeks including sea freight and local delivery. Ask whether the quote includes moving the item into the room, not just the doorstep.
I would rather have fewer pieces that do not wobble. For Singapore small spaces, durable furniture usually means solid wood frames, reinforced corners, and fabrics or leather that can handle humidity. A cheap particleboard wardrobe may survive two moves and then start sagging; a well-built solid wood piece can be disassembled and reassembled several times.
Check the joints. Look for dowels, mortise-and-tenon, or metal brackets rather than staples and glue only. Lift a drawer: if it flexes sideways, that is a warning. Drawer runners should be full-extension and rated for at least 25kg so they do not sag after three years of daily use.
Fabric sofas are comfortable in hot weather, but a full-grain leather sofa cleans better if you eat on it often. For leather, check thickness: 1.2mm to 1.4mm is better than bonded or split leather that flakes after three years. A compact solid wood dining table at 500-700 SGD may be twice the price of a veneer one, but the per-year cost is lower because it can be sanded and refinished.
MIDHILL’s 10-year structural warranty is a useful benchmark if you are buying custom furniture. Ask any maker whether the warranty covers joints, timber movement, and hardware, not just factory defects.
Yes, in most cases. If the living room wall is 2.6m to 3m and you keep the walkway at least 60cm, a 2m sofa works. Check lift diagonal clearance and main door width before ordering, especially if the sofa is one piece and over 85cm deep.
Buy kiln-dried hardwood with sealed end grain and allow a 2-3mm gap around doors and drawers. Keep the room ventilated, wipe moisture off surfaces, and avoid placing solid wood furniture against bathroom walls without airflow. A consistent indoor temperature helps more than constant polishing.
Usually yes if your space is under 50sqm or has awkward alcoves. Custom furniture can shave 10-15cm off depth and fit exact wall lengths, which matters more in HDB entryways and small bedrooms. Expect 4-7 weeks lead time and pay 20-35 percent more than standard pieces.
