Modern TV Console for Singapore Living | MIDHILL

May 2023, Singapore. The Lim family lives in a 1,200sqft HDB in Ang Mo Kio. Their living room wall measures 220cm—just enough space for their 65-inch OLED TV, but too small for a traditional TV cabinet. "We love the open-plan feel of our living room, but a bulky cabinet would crowd the space," says Mr Lim, 38. Their neighbours at Midhill Close had similar struggles with monsoon humidity damaging wooden furniture.

The Challenge of Small Spaces in Singapore

Singaporeans face unique furniture challenges. HDB corridors average 60cm wide in older blocks. High humidity (up to 90% in June) warps particleboard furniture within months. The Lims considered a 180cm white cabinet from a local retailer, but it would look lost against their dark-stained floors. "We need something slim, modern, and durable," Mrs Lim, 36, explains.

Media Console Requirements

The Italian Solution Arrives

The Lims discovered the "Italian Minimalist Sintered Stone TV Cabinet" while researching MIDHILL's quarterly catalog. The specifications matched their needs exactly:

The extendable feature was perfect for their 220cm wall. "The floating metal base gives it an ultra-modern look," says Mrs Lim. "Unlike traditional cabinets, it won't collect dust in our rainy season."

Why Sintered Stone Works in Singapore

Unlike imported solid wood that may crack in humidity, sintered stone is ceramic-like. The manufacturer in Italy uses a patented process that renders it heat resistant (perfect for Singapore's hot AC rooms) and scratch proof. "We noticed how neighbours' wooden consoles warped after two years," Mr Lim explains. "This material will last 10+ years even with air-conditioning on 24/7."

Fitting the Console Perfectly

Installation took two hours. The Lims chose the 220cm version, which fits perfectly between their sofa (260cm) and dining table (150cm). The slim 45cm depth leaves space for their soundbar underneath. "The hidden handleless design means no fingerprints," Mrs Lim notes. "We clean it with just a damp cloth."

Space-Saving Features

The floating metal base creates an illusion of floating shelves—a signature Italian minimalist design element. "At S$3,270, it's expensive," admits Mr Lim. "But compared to replacing a warped cabinet every three years, it's smart spending. The white top reflects ambient light, making our small living room feel 10 times bigger during the monsoon season."

Matching the Singapore Lifestyle

The Lims chose this console over local options because of its water resistance. Singaporeans experience four months of monsoon each year, starting in October. Their neighbours at Midhill Close recently replaced their wooden entertainment unit after termites damaged it during the 2022 rainy season.

The Italian manufacturer offers a 10-year warranty that covers cracking and fading—a critical factor for Singapore's climate. The console's extendable design also appeals to Singaporeans who may need to adjust dimensions during home renovations common in HDBs after 15 years.

Design Notes for Singapore

"The best part is how it transforms the room without taking up ground space," Mrs Lim concludes. "We can now use the entire 220cm wall for art instead of furniture. That's what minimalist design should be about."
